Such an overrated movie. I love Greg Kinnear but even he couldn't save this awful film. A few times I've been tempted to watch it again since it's been years, but I don't want to waste my time.

VERY GOOD 1997 American romantic comedy-drama film with fine performance by Jack Nicholson as a misanthropic, bigoted, and obsessive–compulsive novelist. Lots of amusing dialog as he goes through the film's adventures with the two other…

This is the third time watching this film and it’s just so good, I’ll probably watch it again next year.

This film seems definitely overrated. It doesn't look that much funny, nor appears it much serious with gratuitous and meaningless subplots. Jack Nickolson miscast in the first place with a poor script.

Jill the dog puts in an Oscar-winning performance. Actually, no dog has ever won an Oscar award, so why am I talking so much about dogs & Jill in particular? This Brussels Griffon is the forced animal therapy that Melvin needs to become a…

It's a bit cringe-worthy. However, sober second thoughts on his behavior & mental state compared to everyone manners in the news during pandemic.

Jack Nicholson’s face says a thousand words! Brilliant acting and skillfully chosen cast makes this movie unforgettable! Oscar righteously deserved, if that means anything today.

I am working toward an MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. ULM could not have asked us to watch a better movie to analyze each character. Jack Nicholson is brilliant, by the way (and always has been, since One Flew Over the Cuckoo's…

Insufferable. Cannot believe this won Oscars. Ugh.

Main character Melvin (played brilliantly by Jack Nicholson) suffers from a litany of issues including obsessive-compulsive disorder. This film humanizes OCD through the gruff and socially awkward Melvin, who viewers find out can be a real…

I think this is Jack Nicholson's best film. Saying this, it is a testament to how great an actress Helen Hunt is. She is able to pull a great performance out of this aging superstar. Kudos to the Director as well.

At the time of this movie's release, the role of an obsessive-compulsive character in the lead role was an eye-opener for many. It is a real psychological morass that afflicts real people, Nicholson did a superb acting job and the fact…

This *is* as good as it gets. I went out to buy the movie immediately after watching it the first time. No, Jack Nicholson's character isn't likable, but it works for me.

I don't own many movies, but this is one I really wanted to have.

Nicholson plays a really unlikable character. The dog is really cute though and so are the scenes between the dog & Nicholson's character. It's a good story & the main character does evolve.

I agree with Barbara and Markkluck. People who don't love this movie would probably be happier with Doris Day and the Three Stooges. The humor is subtle, the acting is good, the characters strong. Maybe not Nicholson's absolute best of…

Casting Hunt and Nicholson together may have seemed like a good idea at the time, but there's absolutely no chemistry between them here. The plot is implausible, the entire film start to end is boring, with little in the way of artistic…

I agree with Markkluk. Better the second and third time around. The humor is subtle. The tragedy is poignant. The resolution is quirky, as are the characters.

VERY funny. Some quoteable quips. Some of Jack Nicholsons best. Greg Kinnear and Helen Hunt are great in this too. A really nice ending even though I think the age differences are questionable. This comment was written about 4 months ago…
