The dullest book I have ever read. I despised it from the start and despised it all the way until the end. It has no redeeming qualities. The lines of dialogue are endless and irritating. This would have produced a great screenplay but…

There's a lot here. Which is interesting to me, because plot-wise, there's not much going on. Hemingway's narration is so spare that it feel like literary impressionism. But he dives deep often enough that you can sense his larger…

A small group of young, wealthy people drink and prattle away in France and Spain. Writing comes alive when Hemingway describes the events around the bulls and bullfighting in Pamplona.

This was the first Hemingway novel I tried reading, and while I didn’t overly enjoy it, it likely won’t be my last attempt at tackling his collection of renowned and revered work. My trouble with classics is that I tend to focus on…

The Sun Also Rises, a book by Earnest Hemingway, depicts life after World War 1 through the perspective of the main character, Jake. The story talks about how Jake escapes his controlling relationship, and how he and his friend embark on a…

This was like the movie “Sideways” only nothing of any significance happens.

"The Sun Also Rises" demonstrates that the idle rich of a hundred years ago were no different than the Kardashians today. Bored, boring and a little pathetic. Read the first hundred pages and skip the rest. Nothing changes.

I picked this title up on the advice of a friend who knows that I’m trying to up my game a bit on the classic literature front. I honestly loved it. If you read descriptions of the book, most of them portray it as the quintessential…

The characters amble through life in Paris then in Spain drinking and drinking some more while eating a little. A fun view of the loose way of life in the early 1920’s. Some zingy one-liners similar to Oscar Wilde.

As a young man, Ernest Hemingway worked as a newspaper reporter and as a wartime ambulance driver in Spain. Hemingway draws on both experiences in his first novel: "The Sun Also Rises". The story is set mostly in 1920s Spain and is told…

I read this book to fulfil the goal read a book written by an author in their twenties. to be honest, i found it very boring. its a lot of drinking and a lot of talking, some travel, but basically nothing. my life wasn't enriched in any…

The title of this book is taken from Ecclesiastes 1:5, where the Preacher (Solomon) delivers a long and famous soliloquy on the emptiness, futility and meaninglessness of life. This is certainly exemplified by all the major characters of…

~As if it isn't already known, Hemingway is & was, one of the great writers, even @ a young age. For the 1924 era, 6 yrs post WW1, this was a risqué novel for it's time. He only wrote about what he experienced. His stay in France & Spain…

The first bull was Belmonte’s. Belmonte was very good. But because he got thirty thousand pesetas and people had stayed in line all night to buy tickets to see him, the crowd demanded that he should be more than very good. Belmonte’s great…

This is by far my favorite work of Hemingway's. If you are going to read anything by Hemingway, or have never read anything by him before and would like to, I would recommend this novel.

Just finished this book today. I must say, sometimes I wonder why Hemingway didn't just delve into the noir genre. The amount of masculinity in this story and all that is associated with living in 1920's France (and Spain of course) is…

Eating, drinking, living, this is a classic Hemingway story. His style is clearly not for the majority of "modern people", but if you'd like a picture of 1920s Paris painted on your mind, read this book.

I agree fully with the comment by Spitlead. This book was a challenge to get through and left me feeling incredibly annoyed with the author by the end. The only question on anyone's mind that just so happens to NEVER get answered is: what…

Since reading this story, I've been fantasizing about visiting Pamplona for the running of the Bulls. From what I gather it’s a long week of parties, feasts, wine-drinking, dancing, music, and bull fights. Sounds pretty horrible, right?

Surprised that it was so very disappointing... a high school student could have written as good a book for a summer project.

A patron review from the Adult Summer Game: "Have you ever wanted to run with the bulls? Hemingway writes it as the characters live it, in this post WWI era life transformation novel of Jake Barnes."

Even though the book seemed to be fast-paced, for me, it seemed to drag during most of the book as the characters bantered, drank, drank, drank and ate. Sometimes, I didn't know what was meant, but took that to mean slang/references of…

The Sun Also Rises is my third novel by Ernest Hemingway. There is something fascinating about Hemingway, especially if you know even a little about him. He was a rambunctious man, never settling, always moving. His restlessness led to him…

Hemingway's novel is perhaps a bit lost on me. The narrative is rather straight forward, the language itself rather simplistic and yet extremely evocative. None of the characters are particularly sympathetic. And while the novel is…
