Paris is occupied by the German Army during the summer of 1940. When we meet Karin Levi, she is already living in an attic with her mother, Maman, and brother, Marc. Staying in the attic is no longer safe. The family is forced to flee. While making their way to the South of France, Maman becomes sick and must be left behind. Marc and Karin continue their journey and are able to board the ship Henry Gibbins, which is bound for the United States. Upon arrival in the U.S., they are taken to a refugee camp. In this unforgettable story, Karin learns to rely on herself and discovers the strength she has within.
