Mr. O'Brian's efforts to write an espionage/legal thriller are hit and miss here, but on the whole the book makes for an interesting interlude to the endless voyages, chases and broadsides of some of the preceding volumes. I for one wish more time could have been spent on the trial and/or Maturin's relationship with Diana, hopefully these themes will be further exploted in "The Letter of Marque".
