When I was very young and these books first came out, I would borrow them or sneak them from the Jesuit brothers at the Catholic orphanage I grew up in and was always tremendously impressed with Fleming's biographical profiles of the bad guys - - especially Blofeld in this book, Thunderball. Really superb! I assumed years later Fleming had picked up much from his military service and days in journalism, but then later still I learned that he came from a really rich banker family [their Flemings Bank would be sold for $7 billion to Chase in 2000], and there were probably a lot more conduits of information flowing to Ian Fleming. [His ancestor originally made their fortune during the American Civil War {they were and still are British} when they sold sandbags to the armies during that war.]
