The dazzling Lytton twins, Adele and Venetia, are born into the great Lytton publishing empire. In 1928, on their eighteenth birthday, they are rich and admired, with a confidence verging on arrogance. But the specter of Nazi Germany is growing...Gradually their privileged world darkens in unimaginable ways--but it is not just the twins whose lives have been irrevocably changed. Barty Miller, rescued from the London slums in babyhood by Celia Lytton, is clever, ambitious, and a complete contrast to the twins--and she faces temptation of the most unexpected kind...

This is the sequel to 'No Angel' and won't make nearly as much sense if you haven't read the first volume, given the large number of characters. Like its predecessor, this book is at its heart a classy British soap opera focused on a wealthy publishing family, the Lyttons, with lots of scandalous love affairs, illegitimate children, and family secrets. The backdrop of WWII adds a nice bit of a dramatic weight to the proceedings in the latter half of the book, and even if this is ultimately still sort of melodramatic and ridiculous (far too many things hinge on a letter arriving just in the nick of time), I lost many hours of sleep to this book, and was thinking about it when I wasn't reading it. Highly recommended, if you're not expecting highbrow literature.
