Add a CommentA nice story, but it's little more than that. Martin's powerful narration is on full display about 16 years before A Game of Thrones, but this story doesn't have much lasting power, despite its subtle and sincere moments. I enjoyed the depiction of a young girl on the outskirts of war, feeling its effects as the battlefield inches closer and closer. Probably could have been expanded, but what was I to expect of an illustrated children's book? A solid read that you won't regret, mostly due to its large print and short page count.
Well written. Great fantasy. A little dark themed for part of the book, but not graphic. One part may disturb a sensitive, young child. A reasonable, mostly happy ending.
this book has a number of deaths and violence involved so age suitability has to be re-evaluated.
this is a book for people who don't expect every book to be a fairytale. (a lot of people die in this story. either getting burned to death or getting frozen.)
:I
George R.R. Martin's only children's book owes much to the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen and other early children's writers who tackled dark thematic material in their fantasy worlds, even down to its more antiquated writing style. The Ice Dragon almost reads like a fable that has been passed down through generations.

My 10 year old liked this book a lot and he's not big into reading. The only downfall is that this is the only child's book I could find of this author.
My son in grade 4 just read this aloud to me and we really enjoyed it. A slim, fast-paced book with absolutely stunning illustrations by Luis Royo. Book does contain some very vivid battle imagery including deaths.
From the beginning, Adara was not like other children. She was a “winter child”, and she was not afraid of the ice dragon that inspired so much dread in everyone else when it flew overhead. This unique story of a wonderful friendship and a dangerous quest was written by George R. R. Martin, author of HBO’s “Game of Thrones”.
Great sci-fi for kids...for kids that don't expect everything to be a fairytale.
Great children's book, good character development and a nice story. Easy read
