My third Mary Alice Monroe book. The Beach House was superb. Its sequel The Beach House for Rent not so much.

Sweetgrass is somewhere in the middle. It addresses the struggles and conflicts attendant to owning ancestral property when developers come knocking in popular resort areas. It touches on racial tensions in the Deep South where the descendants of once prosperous plantation owners continue to interact with descendants of slaves. Family secrets and rivalries are woven into the plot like pine in a sweetgrass basket.

I was annoyed by the lack of imagination of Hamlin III and Hamlin IV's demise as well as by Adele's threat of impending doom which didn't manifest for months. Greedy developers don't tend to be patient in real life. . .especially when one is a family member.
