On the eve of the 20th anniversary of his still wildly popular book, Arlen is still sought after as the man who has all the answers. His life collides with Elizabeth, a single mom raising her seven-year-old son, and Kris, a young man fresh out of rehab who is searching for meaning. A very nice rom-com is a very nice thing to be; after all, love is why we’re here (and some other nasty stuff). But this one is by this John Hindman cat who came out of... where did this guy come from..... how come this guy hasn’t been run over by the biz; where the hell did this guy.... He wrote/dir this and the writing of the guru lead is very high wisdom. Just my opine, but, I’m always right, so.... Very high wisdom, probably over y’alls’ head, so don’t fret. The great one signed on so I assume he agreed w/me; Jeff Daniels. --– I got the feeling this Hindman can manifest magically and thus pulled off the miracle: first time director doing his own work. Lots of things magically fell into place making this and I don’t think it’s an accident. --- A lot of the wisdom appears in the titles at the beginning—use the pause on the dvd to read. --– Wisdom aint what it used to presumably be.

This started out so promising but did not follow through and the ending seemed silly and contrived

A clever comedy with a touch of romance. The Answer Man portrays three main characters whose lives intersect. Arlen is an author who has been reclusive during the 20 years after his best selling book became a worldwide sensation. Elizabeth is a chiropractor with a young son. Kris owns a bookstore and has just gotten out of alcohol rehab. Elizabeth and Kris both turn to Arlen for life advice. There is a lot of witty dialog as well as funny situations throughout the movie.

Proof positive that Jeff Daniels is totally under-rated.

I found both Lauren Graham's performance & the film's conclusion weak & annoying. But more often I was pleasantly surprised & even impressed with its witty, original dialogue & the excellent timing of several of its actors in leading & supporting roles.

Good - The Answer Man [aka Arlen Faber] (2009) 95 min. This is a movie about missed opportunities. I’m not sure why the director chose to quietly tie the loose ends without taking advantage of some serious heart strings that he could’ve pulled. Namely, the reason why the little boy, enrolled in grade school, is having problem with basic addition. Jeff Daniels is perfect as a famous author who wrote a Q&A book after allegedly speaking directly with God. I loved the characters in this film – both main and supporting characters. The film jumps around between new age thought and monotheism. The film is charming, will entertain and make you think despite an ending that is not completely satisfactory for the reasons stated above.
