Of the many holiday boomer specials in repeated rotation this season, perhaps none is more beloved--and deservedly so--than "A Charlie Brown Christmas."
Bill Melendez's spare yet lively animation of cartoonist Charles Schulz's world-renowned "Peanuts" kids (and mischievous beagle, Snoopy), Vince Guaraldi's evocative score (including the sweetly melancholy "Christmas Time is Here" and the jazzy "Linus and Lucy"), Schultz's heartfelt and deceptively simple script, and, in a departure from the usual animated television of the era, the use of talented child actors to voice the characters (the standout being young Christopher Shea, the voice of Linus) all combined to create a touching, unforgettable holiday classic.

And to think it almost didn't get off the ground! CBS Television executives and sponsor Coca-Cola reportedly were not thrilled with Schulz's insistence on the inclusion of religious themes, fearful that television audiences would be turned off.

They were wrong; and with its first 1965 airing "A Charlie Brown Christmas" was an enormous success and pronounced an instant classic.

After watching this adorable, animated, feature film (from 1965), yet again, it's so easy to see why it's rated as the second most popular and successful Christmas special, ever, next to Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer, of course.

Created by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, "A Charlie Brown Christmas" has the entire Peanuts Gang excitedly preparing themselves for the up-coming Holiday Season.

As our story opens we find that onion-headed, little boy named Charlie Brown in a very depressed state of mind all because of the way that Christmas has been so over-commercialized these days.

Even good, old Snoopy is getting into the act when he decides to decorate his doghouse, all glitter and glitz.

I guarantee you, "A Charlie Brown Christmas" (which is all voiced by children and contains no laugh-track) is one of the sweetest movies that you're ever gonna see, no matter what age that you might happen to be.

Charlie Brown: 'I think there must be something wrong with me, Linus. Christmas is coming, but I'm not happy. I don't feel the way I'm supposed to feel...I just don't understand Christmas, I guess.

I like getting presents, and sending Christmas cards, and decorating trees and all that, but I'm still not happy...'
