“Cairo” manages to be spry, nimble and light-hearted in its treatment of its subject matter—a jinn who is sought after for his knowledge about a magical word. You’d think the jinn itself would be valuable enough but the author clearly has surprises up her ample sleeves.

Winning characters, fast action and twists of fate set within the titular city are ably accompanied by the black-and-white illustrations of M. K. Perker. They offer a fish-eye view into this vast, sprawling city while spinning a ripping story worthy of the Arabian Nights. For fans who like action, romance, mystery, mysticism, magic and crime in their graphic novels leavened with a hefty dose of the unusual, this graphic novel is not to be missed.

Written by G. Willow Wilson (the gal who's writing the new Ms. Marvel, hurray!), with art by M.K. Perker and letters by Travis Lanham.

Cairo is set in modern Egypt, as you may have guessed from the book's title, with all its political tensions and rich history. Combine a drug smuggler, an Israeli soldier, an American wannabe journalist, a teenager with some bad ideas, and a real jinn, and you have a very interesting story full of people trying to figure out right from wrong, and their relationships with each other, while saving the world.

Even if the art doesn't grab you right away, stick with it. I did, and I fell in love with these people.

This was a SUPER cool graphic novel. I picked it up on a whim from the library... didn't really read what it was about, just thought the cover was cool. Turned out to have a really nifty and unique story! Loved it.

Solid story. Solid writing. A pretty good effort overall. It won't blow you away but it is entertaining.
