This book is a lot more readable when the protagonist is being funny, but most of the time she's being uber-macho and typical, ruthless mother so it gets a bit tedious.
Very well written, great world building, interesting plot and characters. But why; why if we have a female main character does she (between solving major crimes, saving the world etc) spend pages of emotional torment about her lover/husband/ex husband/handsome partner. This uneasy blend of romance novel and action/fantasy gets really old. Do the publishers not think we will not read a well-written, well-plotted book where the main characters love life is NOT front and center. Readers seem to be able to handle, day, Raymond Chandlers books with just an interesting whiff of romantic interest.
