If you want to know how folks gave the censors back then ulcers, may I suggest the `Lullaby of Broadway` number from `GOLD-DIGGERS OF 1935`, the "Well - and who is our lovely visitor?" scene from Spencer Tracy`s 1940 DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, and this nifty little murder mystery set in the world of second class burlesque. It`s not what you see, it`s what you think you see (and what the censor can`t cut `cuz there`s nothing to!) Oh - and to MANMACHINE (jeezus louisa , what a dorky handle! Just wait `til your testicles finally descend, `stud-muffin`) : Lily St. Cyr was one of the highest paid ecdysiasts of the Golden Age of Burlesque. And she slaughtered them and left `em hollin` for more by GETTING DRESSED! Illusion is the trick, sonny! Like calling yourself MANMACHINE! HOO HAH! TELL ME ANOTHER ONE!!

Love Barbara Stanwyck and love this movie, just watched it again for around the 4th time in several years. Stanwyck does some fun musical numbers and it's a neat little murder mystery that will keep you guessing till the end. Lots of great supporting actors too, including Iris Adrian, beautiful Marion Martin and comedian Pinky Lee. The story based on a novel by Gypsy Rose Lee.

This barely entertaining "whodunnit" Chick Flick, set in the supposedly bawdy world of the NY burlesque scene, certainly could've been (and should've been) a helluva lot more exciting and, yes, risque than it was._____ Regardless of the rigid censorship that clearly hung over this 1943 film's head, I still think that it wimped out, big time._____ Based on Gypsy Rose Lee's titillating novel "The G-String Murders", Lady Of Burlesque's story concerns the preposterous backstage murders of 2 strippers who are strangled by the killer with (get this!) their very own g-strings. (Spare me!)_____ Believe me, this film's premise definitely sounds about 10 times more entertaining than it really is._____ This film contains far too much backstage bickering amongst a bunch of 2-bit strippers, for my liking. But, as a means to aleviate some of the monotonous bitchiness that seems to prevail, a token catfight is thrown into the infernal squabbling (cackle-cackle-cackle) for good measure._____ In Lady Of Burlesque, actress Barbara Stanwyck puts in an unconvincing performance as Dixie Daisy, a stereotypical stripper (or is it a hooker with transferable skills?) who, though jaded to the core, naturally, has a heart of the purest gold. (Sheesh!)_____ Filmed in b&w, thank goodness that this boring backstage bullshit only had a running time of 90 minutes.
