Emily Tempest is appointed an aboriginal community police officer for the Moonlight Downs station. Investigating the possible murder of an elderly geologist, she encounters Danny, an emotionally fragile Stonehouse mob teenager who is traumatized by the image of "poison flowing green." The terrain of Australia, a Japanese rock garden painter, a rash of unexplained illnesses, and the implausibility of two elderly friends killing each other present Emily with a unique puzzle.

This is such an interesting novel. He writes very well and his main character is just brilliant. As someone who is interested in what has happened to First Nations in BC and Canada, getting this view of Aboriginal people in Australia was very helpful. He treats his characters with tenderness.

My first Adrian Hyland was Diamond Dove, which I really enjoyed and now, Gunshot Road has me hooked. I love the main character, Emily Tempest, who is an Aboriginal Community police officer working in the harsh land of Northern Australia where she grew up. Hyland grabs you from the first page and keeps you till the end. A wonderful read.
