This was such a cool book - it was really nice to read a fairy tale like story written by a modern writer. I enjoyed it a lot.

I wish, at some point, that she had actually described what a step-well was. It's a square (usually) fortified pit that is dug straight into the ground and it acts as a resevoir to catch the monsoon rains - the steps go down the well like a diamond pattern all the way to the bottom so that you can always reach the water). As a side note, the Brits didn't believe in step wells, they thought they were dirty and they destoyed most of them, which caused the biggest famine in Indian history.

It was refreshing to read a fairytale where two stepsisters love and respect each other. I enjoyed the setting being modeled on India instead of an European country.

A fresh take on an old fairy tale, taking place in India. Two sisters are given very different gifts by a goddess, which will bring them both blessings and curses. A very enjoyable read.
