Joe Pickett is in his last week as the temporary game warden in the isolated town of Baggs, Wyoming, but there have been strange things going on in the surrounding mountains, and his conscience won't let him leave without checking them out: reports of camps looted, tents slashed, elk butchered. And then there's the runner who's gone missing - an Olympic hopeful who'd been training in the region, then vanished. The farther out Joe rides, the more he wishes he could just turn around and go home.

And he's right to be concerned, because what awaits him is like nothing he's ever dealt with, like something out of an old story, except this is all too real and all too deadly. When he'd first saddled up, he'd thought of this simply as his last patrol - but it just may be his last patrol ever!

I feel like the ever-present hyperbolic copy that proclaimed Forrest J. Ackerman's monthly "Famous Monsters of Filmland" the "Best Issue Ever!" but once again C.J.Box has delivered the goods! This is the twelfth book of his I've read, all inclusive and chronological from the first Joe Pickett and two "stand alone" titles and each has been a satisfying and entertaining read! I'll be back for more soon.

Not a particularly good read. The author goes to extremes to justify all manner of mindless violence. Characters not particularly believable.

More an apology for the mindless paranoia of some in our population than a well written book.

4/5 stars; the story begins with a simple thread that continues to weave into an epic storyline. I drop a star because certain elements could have been left out and the ending seemed to serve the narrative more than the characters. Would make an excellent film.
