Like "Life of Pi, Beatrice and Virgil" uses animals to discuss the human condition, in this case, to address the atrocities of the Holocaust. At the center of the novel is the relationship between two Henrys, a novelist and a taxidermist, who collaborate on a play about a donkey and a howler monkey who have survived a genocide. Heartbreaking and utterly original, the novel asks enduring questions about life and art, truth and deception, responsibility and complicity--BOT website.

I listened to the audio version and found the presentation very good. There are some slower passages in this book where the author shows off some pretty amazing writing but I felt while "reading" those that I was in a creative writing class - e.g. "describe a pear". In spite of that, I heartily recommend this book; the device of using the animal characters super-imposed on the quests of the human characters is done brilliantly. The basic theme of the book is an old one and yet the author brings it about in such an artful way. There is lots to say about this, even after nearly 2 years I still think about this book.

A strange story about an alligorical donkey and a monkey, told within a frame by a taxidermist to a writer. The middle part is a bit dry. Near the end, the writer discovers the play he is being read is on the same topic as his writing. Much of it focuses on character development.

Excellent book. The audio version is great. It was a treat to listen to. (Just don't expect "entertainment"; the book makes you think.)

I enjoyed Yann Martel's "Life of Pi" very much. I was expecting an adventure; but this book was very slow and depressing.
