I LOVE this book! My son and I had to read it and reread it for a week straight!

I don't understand why this book is such a big deal. I really only got one quote out of it; the rest of the story is strange.

Wanted to read this to see if it was good enough to add to my book buys for new parents.
YES!

Wish this was around 18 years back, it would have been added to my son's favorite books list.

The aptly-titled “Instructions” plays with the typical fairy tale structure. Mr. Gaiman uses very spare prose to remind readers of all the twists and turns that await those who travel on the path or stray from it. This is a book that is and isn’t a story, is whimsical and sober at once, playful and cautionary. The illustrations by the incomparable Charles Vess are a wonderful accompaniment, with surprises and secret details sprinkled here and there throughout the pages. A tree does not merely shelter an old woman but harbors crows above her head and hidden creatures with glowing eyes in its roots. Take heed, travelers, and beware of wolves.

An excellent book that is the instructions and themes in every story ever told, any fantasy ever held and every RPG ever played. I recommend it to all.

This book, tragically, is probably overlooked in the Neil Gaiman catalogue just because it's a short picture book. Rather than depicting an entire epic narrative, it is instructions (possibly directed at the reader) to be followed before one's own journey. It is certainly a very charming book that awakens the imagination of any reader who has ever wanted to go on an adventure.

Some of the very best advice I've heard in a long time coming. It's supposedly instructions if you find yourself in a fairy tale. Perhaps it also works if you find yourself in reality.

Originally a poem by Gaiman, this book is beautifully illustrated with soft colours.
