"Nobody, I believe, has ever found it possible to like the heroine of Mansfield Park ." --Lionel Trilling

In this ingenious new twist on Mansfield Park , the famously meek Fanny Price--whom Jane Austen's own mother called "insipid"--has been utterly transformed; she is now a rich heiress who is spoiled, condescending, and generally hated throughout the county. Mary Crawford, on the other hand, is now as good as Fanny is bad, and suffers great indignities at the hands of her vindictive neighbor. It's only after Fanny is murdered on the grounds of Mansfield Park that Mary comes into her own, teaming-up with a thief-taker from London to solvethe crime.

Featuring genuine Austen characters--the same characters, and the same episodes, but each with a new twist--MURDER AT MANSFIELD PARK is a brilliantly entertaining novel that offers Jane Austen fans an engaging new heroine and story to read again and again.

Jane Austen’s world is turned on its head and murder is the result. Imagine a Mansfield Park where Fanny Price is rich, spoilt and bitchy, Mary Crawford is refined, intelligent and resourceful, and all the other well known characters are not quite what one would expect. It takes a stretch of the imagination, but Shepherd keeps the Austen ambience for our enjoyment, bringing in familiar story lines whilst creating a suspenseful murder mystery.

difficult to keep the characters straight

i read Jane Austen for the language not the plot, this book is not written to JA's standard.

I LOVED LOVED LOVED this book! It did take me quite a while to adjust to the changes to the story, but once the initial shock and confusion wears off, it really is an excellent book. I did the final 100 pages in one night and was up until 4:30 in the morning because I simply couldn't put it down! I did have an inkling on who the murderer was but all the evidence kept sending my suspicions elsewhere... I mean, it was just awesome! I hope Lynn Shepherd puts out more books because it was just great! A little gruesome, but really sounded a lot like Jane Austen, which was even better! A must read for Austen and/or British mystery fans!

By page nine, I was totally fed up with the selfishness of most of the characters--some of whom were dead by that time.
