I'm forever looking for something good, something different on tv. And the Buffalo PBS station usually provides it. After watching an episode of the BBC series "Shetland" I noticed in the credits "based on Ann Cleves Blue Lightniung". Something to follow up and follow up I did.
Cleeves' novel is set on The Fair Isle in the Shetland Islands. A place of perpetual rain wind and birds. And Perez, an Inspector on the police force finds himself on the island, the place of his birth when two grizzly murders are committed.
Cleeves writes the classical murder mystery: one copper; one murderer; two victims; and a room (in this case, half an island) full of people.
The plot loves to lead you astray. Who do you think it is? First this one, then that.
The novel moves you along sedately. Except for the elements.

Not so thrilled about the ending either but still a good read - especially if you've been to the Shetlands.

Jimmy Perez returns to his home on an island in the Shetlands and needs to solve 3 murders. Expect lots of info on birdwatching as the murders take place while birders are on the island. Good description of the barren, windswept island. As usual, Cleeves comes up with a murderer that I didn't even suspect.

The ending is a shock, but the clues were there. I just didn't "get" them. It was a good puzzle and the ending gives a lead in to more stories, just with a completely different twist, I expect. I'll be reading the next one to see how she develops the lives of the main characters. They are people I have come to know and care about.

One of my favourite series.
The story is tight and interesting; great characters and I enjoy the Shetland setting thereby learning a little more about the islands and the lifestyle.
I highly recommend all Ann Cleeves books.
Shetland series (BBC ) can sometimes be seen on PBS.

This was a good book but for some reason it seemed to take me forever to get through it. Maybe because I knew what was coming at the end (I innocently read a synopsis of the next book in the series d'oh). Jimmy Perez takes fiancee Fran to meet his parents on Fair Isle and while there two murders are committed. Due to a storm, Jimmy's on his own investigating for a while. Things get muddy when it seems his own father might have had a role in the second murder. Interesting characters, each with his/her requisite secret, abound. I liked this book but really hated how it ended. Why do so many authors not allow their policemen characters any happiness?

Holy smokes! If you've been following this series, you're not going to believe the ending of this book.

While this series is a bit "moody" - and this might not be the best installment - it is a solid offering.
