I loved this book !!

I was looking to finish "Wicked" but all copies were out, so I picked up this book as a "consolation" price. So glad I did. I was hooked.

The whimsical cynicism, and the poetic, almost perfect foil, that wraps the two main characters together is almost too rich.

I love the writing style and it's refreshing to read the character development of strangers that, by the end of the novel, seem as familiar as Maguire's loveable and misunderstood revisited characters.

“The Next Queen of Heaven” is a wicked romp of a book, featuring as it does a wildly askew group of characters duking out their various roles in life and jostling each other for center stage. Just when you think you’ve pinned down the central character of this novel (is it the addled Leontina Scales, her rebellious daughter Tabitha, her effete son Kirk, a cloister of superannuated nuns or the dying Sean, et al.?), the focus shifts to bring another person under its microscope. Nuns, priests, hooligans, trailer trash, gossips, sluts, homosexuals, virgins and lunatics form a vigorous stew that brims with humor, expected and unexpected tragedy, religious pedantry and pageantry.

Mr. Maguire is a daredevil of an author, a man who doesn’t limit himself when it comes to topics and genres. You can’t help but wonder what he’s going to try next.

I made it to page 64 before I put this book down for good. Maybe that was too early to abandon it, but the only reason I made it that far was that I was stuck on a bus on my commute home and had nothing better to do with my time. I just couldn't get into this book and didn't care at all for the characters. I was really looking forward to reading this, as I'm a fan of the author, and am experiencing a bit of guilt at this abandonment, but I just can't fathom reading through the next +250 pages.
