Chili Palmer, the small time gangster turned movie producer from "Get Shorty," is back in Leonard's entertaining, sardonic 1999 sequel. It opens with Palmer and an old acquaintance have lunch, which ends with the latter with a bullet in his head. As always, the dialogue is whip smart, the characters vivid, and the plot full of twists and turns. While "Get Shorty" focused on the movie industry, this, while still set in L.A., is more about music, as Palmer manages a singer looking to break out. Throw in a hulking gay Samoan bodyguard, Palmer's dead friend's frisky widow, Russian mobsters, Aerosmith (seriously), and a hip-hop crew and you've got one of Leonard's funniest books. Made into a movie (John Travolta returned as Palmer) that nobody really liked.

terrific sequel to the get shorty novel. mr leonard knew how to engage and keep a reader entertained. long may he run

I wasn't disappointed by Mr. L this time either. The dialogue is always a delight and the smart a** comments always get me laughing. The story works -- winds up a little too fast -- but fun to read
