Originally published in Great Britain in 1978, the novel describes Margaret Marsh's coming of age one summer between the world wars. Caught in the backwash of a fervently religious father, a mother bitterly nostalgic for what might have been, the tea and sympathy of some thoroughly secular neighbors and the bawdy jokes of her nanny Lydia, Margaret's world hurtles towards a shattering moment of truth. Drama, tragedy and a touch of farce lend themselves to Gardam's typically eloquent prose. With subtlety and precision, God on the Rocks provides an intimate portrait of the tensions that divide men and women, present and past, and the love and sorrow that lingers throughout. --From publisher description.

A coming of age story with a touch of farce.

I enjoyed Old Filth more. Story of Margaret, an 8 year old girl, that didn't seem to have too much connection with her family. Interesting period. After the first WW. Interesting people. Margaret's father was a early day evangelist, her mother went along with it. They had a maid that Margaret's father was determined to save her soul. There wasn't too much explanation of why people did what they did. After the beginning, which seemed disjointed to me, I enjoyed the writing.
It seemed like the people were all lonely.

Jane Gardam is becoming one of my favourite writers. This was published in 1978 and was shortlisted for the Booker prize.

The minimalist prose maintains a modern feel to the read. The quirky characters and unpredictable storyline make it all seem so real - and interesting.

An old novel from the 70s repackaged to look like a new novel. If it had been a good novel, I might not have minded, but it was really tedious. Typical boomer coming of age bull - self-centered, conceited, pretentious crap.
