Brilliant and haunting, and very sad. A man is attacked, loses his memory and is unable to be the man he was. Written in a bare bones style reminiscent of Hemmingway, you are drawn into this man's nightmare. It's a major departure from the typical crime novel for which Westlake was known.

A very depressing book. No beginning with his memory lost, and no end, with the guy ending up in strange town with no prospect. I don't recognize Westlake in this. It reads like a dairy almost. Very dull. The only spark was that shining metal square. But even that ended up as a dud. And the fact that at the end he wanted to return to the "Town" was an error. What would he be looking for there. He'd
be back to square one, at the beginning of the book, or another book. He should have stayed in New York and start anew there, away from his old "friends" and start finding himself with Marty and Jack. This would have ended the book in a "positive way". But maybe that was the way people wrote in the 1960's.
