I enjoyed this book reading it as history from a young girls viewpoint, no revisionist history in this account. Can you imagine leaving everyone and everything you know in a small ship over an ocean which is not even equipped for passengers to a destination you know little about- and landing in the winter? They went thousands of miles out of their way, had run out of food, many were starving and dying daily. Thank heavens for their resourcefulness and the kindness of the Native Americans or the passengers of the Mayflower and their descendants would not be living to tell the tale.

Good book and the diary form makes it unique. I would also check out the other books in the Dear America series, especially those by Kristianna Gregory; The Winter of Red Snow, Cannons at Dawn, and Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie.

A Journey to the New World is a book that I read in second grade. I loved historical fiction ever since! This story is written in diary form which makes it very interesting throughout. The main character's personality is easy to relate to. I enjoyed Mem's voyage because of the descriptive details in the diary. I reccomend this book to kids around 8-10 years. If you love history, then this is the book for you!
