Offered in 0 more formatsTraces the lives of six fashionable 1930s New Yorkers and the people they encounter in the 24 hours after an unpleasant dinner party. Hector Champion, the host of the party, contends with his own boredom and mortality. Phillip Dantry, Hector's nephew, visits the actress he loves. But does she really love him, or just his wealth and social position? Jim Towner leaves to visit his nightclub singer mistress, only to become embroiled in a crime of passion when her husband returns. Jim's wife Fanny loses her lover, David Melbourn, only to find he is the only one who can save her husband and family from disgrace. Melbourne himself courts the icy divorcee Mrs. Wintringham. Savina Jerrold, an old family friend of Hector Champion, considers her life and choices and muses on the changes to New York since her girlhood in the 1880s. Throughout the book, Bromfield provides momentary glimpses into the histories, psychologies, and worldviews of his characters, both great and small. 24 hours weaves a picture of New York society from the entrenched old guard to the fashionable migrants from the Midwest, even to the hardworking immigrants and lower classes.
