It is the year 42 AD, and Centurion Macro, battle-scarred and fearless, is in the heart of Germany with the Second Legion, the toughest in the Roman army. Cato, a new recruit and the newly appointed second-in-command to Macro, will have more to prove than most. In a bloody skirmish with local tribes, Cato gets his first chance to prove that he's more than a callow, privileged youth. As their next campaign takes them to a land of unparalleled barbarity - Britain - a special mission unfolds, thrusting Cato and Macro headlong into a conspiracy that threatens to topple the Emperor himself.

Good historical fiction about a Roman legion being sent to Britain in 42 AD to prepare for invasion. This is the first book in the series (SPL has the first 3 or 4 the series is up to #14). Easy to read, would be a great beach book or airplane book. Nothing too complex or confusing. The Legion is preparing for Claudius' invasion of England. Good read!

An intresting excursion for history buffs . Puts flesh and bones on the factual records ,.. and the fictional sub-plotting is harmless fun

As far as I can tell the historical aspect is done very well. A good portrayal of life in the empire in politics and war (accurate equipment, training, and tactics). The story isn't a bad one either, the main character is believable, most of the characters are. What they aren't, is fleshed out and filled in. The interactions as well are just slightly off. It felt like a journeyman carpenter's work where the joints are cut well, but they don't quite fit each other. Worth reading but definitely a work by an inexperienced writer. I'm hoping his work improves in the rest of the series.

really great book! gives you glimpse into the life of a legionary that most people would never know. Action and intrigue on a historical setting. Perfect length not a lot of useless filler lotts of authors throw in just to make the book longer.
