Following his hugely successful The Math Book and The Physics Book , Clifford Pickover now chronicles the advancement of medicine in 250 entertaining, illustrated landmark events. Touching on such diverse subspecialties as genetics, pharmacology, neurology, sexology, and immunology, Pickover intersperses "obvious" historical milestones--the Hippocratic Oath, general anesthesia, the Human Genome Project--with unexpected and intriguing topics like "truth serum," the use of cocaine in eye surgery, and face transplants.

I really enjoyed reading these little gobbets of medical history. The bibliography is fairly good, but the library I use doesn't have most the items listed, not even those mentioned under 'general'. I was most edified by the numerous entries on anatomy, which went through numerous developments, and made note of the books mentioned. There was a curious lack of what were called 'curiosities' or 'monstrosities', though historically, their investigation, including their anatomy, were a major contributor to the development of medical science, much to the embarrassment of today's doctors.
