"In the late spring of 1865, as Washington mourns the death of Lincoln, Detective Temple McFadden witnesses a murder at the B&O Railroad Station--and then makes an even more staggering discovery. On his slain friend's body he finds two diaries, one that clearly belongs to Mary Todd Lincoln and one that he learns was penned by John Wilkes Booth. A pretty good thriller with historical foundations that gives us a flawed male hero with a slightly more virtuous female heroine and spouse.
The settings and characters remind me of the show "Doctor Quinn, Medicine Woman".

It makes a man's blood "boil", the injustices accounted here (whether true or fictional) and one is drawn to root for the hero and his friends.

Another character somewhat like this novel's Temple McFadden is the fictional hero Indiana Jones (yes, named after a dog).
