A very interesting concept - a mix of Japanese-like mythology, environmentally devastating steampunk technology, a corrupt Shogunate, and a young woman whose loyalty is tested to the max. This is a dark, complex fantasy construct -- be glad the author provided maps and a glossary!

I liked this book. It was a little slow going. However, once you get who is who It's pretty cool.

A mild beginning that gradually reveals a wretched, tyrannical dystopia filled with moral and social outrages worthy of a hardcore revolution.
Resistance lead by a mythical creature and a magical heroine.
Action driven and well written with often poetic passages.

This book is so good!

The setting, the descriptions, the fights (OMG THE FIGHTS!!), the characters, the conversations (I loved the way the guys swore!) Once you understand the meaning of the Japanese terms for the titles, clothing and weapons in the earlier chapters, you can get lost in this beautiful and horrible world.

A pretty good book. The characters are interesting and the world is pretty cool, too. It felt a bit like a "girl and her horse" type of story for a bit, but by the end it had gotten rather interesting.

Why is this in the adult collections when it's marketed as a teen/YA novel?
