Explores the insular religious community, whose intense faith and adherence to 400-year-old traditions have by turns captivated and baffled Americans for more than a century. The film examines the beliefs, lifestyle, and history of the Amish, as well as their complex relationship to mainstream American culture. Beautifully and lyrically photographed, The Amish is part history, part observational documentary that takes viewers into the world of the Amish.

Written and directed by David Belton in 2012, this 113-minute documentary delves into the society of the Amish.
On October 2, 2006, a 32-year-old non-Amish truck driver entered a one-room school house in the Amish community of Nickel Mines in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and shot 10 young girls, killing five, before committing suicide as police officers stormed the school.
Just hours after the shooting, Amish community members visited the gunman's family to offer forgiveness.
You should be able to look into the souls and minds of the Amish people.
It is a mind-opening and profoundly thought-provoking documentary.

This is an interesting and understated documentary about Amish life in the United States. The filmmakers cover everything from the origins of their religious beliefs, to the recent tragedies they've experienced, and the changes that have come about with the dwindling of farming.

Love the Amish culture, sense of community & simple ways but definitely am not a fan of the harmful practice of shunning. Does it say in the Bible to do this?

Really well shot. They did a great job in respecting the community, showing the Amish working at a distance, and using pastoral working scenes while running the audio from the interviews overtop. This explained the more traditional Amish cultures and is worth watching.

A beautifully and gently shot documentary. Offers a brief history, many respectful interviews, and gives a good overview of what the Amish face now. Quiet, but moving.

Good general overview, but for those already familiar with the Amish, nothing too stunningly new here.
