The book that I will be reviewing is called City Of Bones written by Cassandra Clare. This book is about a girl named Clary Fray who can see things that "normal" people cannot. She first notices these talents when she witnesses a murder committed by three boys covered in weird markings. When she tries to tell someone she finds out that there was never a murder. Clary then meets Jase, a Shadowhunter whos job is to get rid of demons. Suddenly her life changes in a split second when her mother disappears and she comes face to face with a demon. I really enjoyed this book because I like books about fantasy and mystery. I would give this book a 4 out of 5 star rating. @PrimaBallerina of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

City of Bones was an enjoyable read. The world and plot were interesting, and the characters were well written. However, I did have some small issues with the main character Clary Fray. I found her a bit annoying. City of Bones was full of action sequences, adventures, romance and great plot twists which made you rethink everything you thought you knew. I was happily surprised with this book as it seems to get some mixed ratings. One thing I wasn’t thrilled about was Clare’s writing in the novel. While descriptive characters and settings are good for stories, too much isn’t good. I found that she over described things which got a bit distracting but did paint a good picture in my head. Hopefully the series gets better from here and I can’t wait to read the next novel. Rating 3.5/5. @average_Bookworm of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

The first book in the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, City of Bones revolves around a fifteen-year-old girl named Clary Fray who discovers she is a Shadowhunter, a being that's half-angel and half-human who fights demons for a living. She goes on a quest to find her missing mother, who had been taken by the evil Valentine Morgenstern. This series is my favourite one of all time, but the first book is hard to get into. It is the author’s debut novel as well, so the writing isn’t the best like in later books. However, the story line is what kept me going and the many plot twists that lie within are still talked about today. If you haven't read this book, you have a thing coming. 3/5 Stars. @SeraphinaWilliams of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

It really breaks my heart to see all the hate comments....:(((( EVERYONE LISTEN TO ME. THIS BOOK IS THE BEST BOOK YOU’LL EVER READ!!!! IGNORE THE HATERS AND READ. THIS. BOOK. YOU ARE SOOOO LUCKY THAT THIS BOOK EVEN EXISTS IN YOUR WORLD. THE SERIES ARE ALSO (a word that describes the best thing in the world)!!!!
(The first few pages might be a bit boring. Get through it and you’ll love it.
(Also, this book is not scary. Altho it’s more like a teen-fiction)

Try this one first -author is Cassandra Clare.

The first couple pages can be a drag, but once you get past them it's a page turning novel!

A good book for when you simply wish to turn off your brain and enjoy a fast paced yet entertaining read. Though the writing can be a bit choppy at times, with exposition handled in a showcase fashion, the premise and plot are entertaining enough to overlook the book's seemingly lazy oversight of the "show-don't-tell" method. My only true issues are the characters, but it's mostly due to personal preference. I typically shy away from or completely despise the "lone female in a friend group" characters trope, as it is commonly used as an excuse for two women in the same book to be catty to each other, and more often then not, lead to slut shaming. I fear that the epilogue to City of Bones does not make up for over 300 pages of our main protagonist hating on the only other girl in the book simply because she's "hotter and knows it". But this is the first book in the series, so my hope is that this does not continue into the others, or if it does, it's addresses and is dealt with more naturally and tastefully then throwing in the "I'm sorry I was a bitch to you, but I've never met another female my age in my life, so I needed act like a hostile gorilla to you!" excuse.

Pretty good book in general. Lots of plot twists. Its also really funny, and slightly romantic. There will be some language in this book. I recommend this book to anyone that likes a bunch of genres mended into one book!

I didn't enjoy this book... It had some good ideas but was poorly executed. Slow pace and boring characters.

When clary enters the pandemonium club she hardly expects to witness a murder, especially one that only she seems to be able to see. Beginning with that night Clary gets plunged in to a hidden world of shadow hunters and downworlders. Starting with the disappearance of her mom and moving to the even more extreme, this book will leave you dying to read the whole series!

This is one of my favourite books. I love the characters, particularly Clary and Jace. The way Cassie Clare writes is wonderful, it is beautifully descriptive and witty. I fell in love with Jace in this book, and he remains my favourite male character. I also love Clary, she is 'one of us'.

The back:
Their hidden world is about to be revealed...
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder--much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Clary knows she should call the police, but it's hard to explain a murder when the body disappears into thin air and the murderers are invisible to everyone but Clary.
Equally startled by her ability to see them, the murderers explain themselves as Shadowhunters: a secret tribe of warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. Within twenty-four hours, Clary's mother disappears and Clary herself is almost killed by a grotesque demon.
But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know....

lms Mar 22, 2008

Through meeting Jace, Alec and Isabelle - teenaged defenders of demonic evil on earth - Clary becomes embroiled in a world class struggle of good and evil and realizes that she may have superhero traits of her own.
