It's 1987 in Bayonne, New Jersey. The bars are full and smoky, and two old friends, Debby and Beth, are out looking for a good time. With their hair teased and clothes tight enough that they looked painted on, you would never suspect one is a single mother and the other is a lonely office worker. But what they don't see is that most of the men that they meet are only looking for one night stands, not a long term relationship.

This is what the acting and dialogue are like in this movie about nothing: "Deb!" "Oh my God, Deb!" "I know, right?" All of it done with terrible Brooklyn-esqe accents and exaggerated facial expressions.

A beaut little flick, but very much for grownups, about confused adolescence, and then some. Frankly, I had no idea Uma Thurman could act, though I've seen her in enough. And I hardly twigged to her own lanky attractiveness till this. The script is fair, too. Overall there's a good supporting cast and art direction, feel for the time and place. Sometimes the script's a bit uninspired for being too ordinary, yet there's enough in it that the lead isn't completely unsympathetic or desperate. The theme of deluded, and woefully inexperienced disco chicks isn't laid on too thickly (unlike in that title). To the contrary, she simply yearns, and is very mistaken about how one goes about changing that. The compare-and-contrast with the elder couple is a bit too obvious, but it's saved by the good, low-key acting. Thurman alone makes this worth watching, as does Ben Gazzara and the redoubtable Gena Rowlands. If there's a soundtrack CD, it'd be worth buying: It's Impossible (I don't think Como's version), Lauper's apt Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Chrissy Hynde, and other goodies. A high point for this period in girl-centred flicks: Thurman and the team can be proud.

Well acted by both women. Juliette Lewis is always great. The title is very appropriate for this unfortunate story. Justin Chambers from Grey's Anatomy is in the movie.

Great acting by Uma Thermun and Juliette Lewis. These two lower class girls look for love in all the wrong places. You feel for them and the embarrassing way they tart themselves up to get a guy
