I hadn't read any of the books in this series between The Birchbark House (which I read as a kid, and loved) and this one, so I don't think I quite got the full emotional heft of this that I would have gotten had I done so -- but I still really liked this. Erdrich does an excellent job of painting a picture of a world and life that will be very foreign to a lot of her readers, and yet doing it in a way that it never feels like an information dump. It's a really vivid, lovely look at a Native family and how they lived -- and it's definitely encouraged me to go back and fill in the gaps that I've missed in this series.
