"In this collection of poetry, Nikki Grimes looks afresh at the poets of the Harlem Renaissance -- including voices like Langston Hughes, Georgia Douglas Johnson, and many more writers of importance and resonance from this era -- by combining their work with her own original poetry. Using "The Golden Shovel" poetic method, Grimes has written a collection of poetry that is as gorgeous as it is thought-provoking. This special book also includes original artwork in full-color from some of today's most exciting African American illustrators, who have created pieces of art based on Nikki's original poems. Featuring art by: Cozbi Cabrera, R. Gregory Christie, Pat Cummings, Jan Spivey Gilchrist, Nikki Grimes, E. B. Lewis, Frank Morrison, Brian Pinkney, Sean Qualls, James Ransome, Javaka Steptoe, Shadra Strickland, and Elizabeth Zunon. A foreword, an introduction to the history of the Harlem Renaissance, author's note, poet biographies, and index makes this not only a book to cherish, but a wonderful resource and reference as well"-- Provided by publisher.

A wonderful poetic connection between the Harlem Renaissance and the present. This would be particularly useful in a classroom setting.

‚ÄčI enjoyed this book of poetry and appreciate Nikki Grime's dedication to the craft as a whole. Not only was I introduced to some new-to-me poets who blossomed during the Harlem Renaissance, I also learned about a method of writing poetry- the Golden Shovel- which seems awesome as a means of inspiration and difficult to successfully execute at the same time. On top of all that, there are great illustrations by some well-respected children's book illustrators, too. The total package!

Nikki Grimes at her best, able to communicate magic that only poetry can convey. Nikki Grimes will tell you that she's had a rough childhood and that a part of her work is meant to help children find solace and affirmation in those dark places. Everyone can find beauty in her poetry, especially as she honors the Beat Poets that came before her. This one will be getting a lot of buzz this year.

First let me just say that I had no idea that this was a children's book; not that it bothered me but still. I also had not heard of Nikki Grimes prior to reading this book of poetry and I had no idea what the Golden Shovel method was, so I'm glad she explained it at the start of the book. The technique seems pretty challenging but I think she did a good job creating original works of her own using it. I especially enjoyed her poems, "In Search of a Superpower" and "A Dark Date for Josh".
