The incredible true story of British explorer Percy Fawcett, who journeys into the Amazon at the dawn of the twentieth century and discovers evidence of a previously unknown, advanced civilization that may have once inhabited the region.
"The never-ending jungle proves perfectly suited to the filmmaker's lush, operatic aesthetic, as does the film's central theme of escaping one's background, through whatever means necessary."--Globe and Mail.
"The movie is 141 minutes long but you rarely feel its weight; that's how confident a filmmaker Gray has become."--Boston Globe.
"Gray, even as he pushes at the edges of what is filmable, never loses his capacity for creating moments of rapturous beauty. See this thing on the biggest screen you can find."--Village Voice.

If you like to see real time periods in the past, this is excellent. Well done on explorer 1905 to 1925, his life, attitudes, and society.

I recommend the book this is based on, by David Grann.

Okay, but I failed to see how this story was so remarkable a movie had to be made about it?? Unlike Hidden Figures, I didn't think to myself afterwards "I can't believe I've never heard of this guy before!"

I wanted to like this movie so much. It's a great story and I love the cast. However, the film suffers from poor editing. The film has a runtime of 141 minutes, and you feel every minute of the film. It is just SO long and dull.

One can see why a filmmaker would be taken by this tale and want to bring it to the screen. Perhaps David Lean could have done it; but James Gray, the director and writer of this attempt, definitely could not. The players are generally up to it, but they are saddled with dialogue that is a serial embarrassment. There are decent scenes, to be sure, but the whole is unconvincing, long and and tedious. Sole redeeming factor: we get to look at Sienna Miller's extraordinarily lovely face from time to time.

This type of movie deserves a wide audience for the simple fact that it is based on real events. So many scenes send your senses reeling for a multitude of reasons based on emotion. For me, one big juxtaposition is calling the old world (Europe) civilized in one scene and in the next they are at war killing with a gas. There are many lessons in this movie that I will watch again in time.

Save your time. I managed to watch this "sleeper" of a film from beginning to end, in some silly hope that I would be gifted with something remarkable. I won't spoil anything suffice to say that the toast remained burnt and flavourless throughout. In other words, if you fell asleep you should not have any regrets upon your awakening.

Based on a true story? While exploring the uncharted territory of Brazil early in the 20th century 2 explorers encounter an opera in progress in the jungle. That's when I ejected the DVD. There may have been something interesting going on but I found this to be so unbelievable that I did not waste my time with this movie.
