I guess that I just wasn't in the right frame of mind when I initially sat down to watch 1959's "Operation Petticoat".
'Cause once the 5 army nurses (in high-heels, no less) boarded the USS Sea Tiger, it completely changed the whole tone of the story for the worst.
Prior to this unwelcome arrival of these women - "Operation Petticoat" was definitely building up to being a pretty decent WW2 drama taken from the masculine standpoint of the men of the US Navy.
Anyway - I'm not saying that this movie was awful ('cause it wasn't ) - I'd say that it was just "OK" at best.
Far too much of the humor relies on the audience buying into those wonderful 1950's female stereotypes. I mean, we have female army officers, nurses, acting like silly little girls. It's quite revolting. In other words, far from being a classic, the film feels like an unintelligent, unenlightened piece of pop trash.
Directed by Blake Edwards in 1959, this American war-time comedy depicts the misadventures of the fictional US Navy submarine, USS Sea Tiger, during the opening days of the United States involvement in World War II.
Although some incidents in the film supposedly happened with some of the Pacific Fleet's submarines during the war, you need a willing suspencion of disbelief.
In any case, you should be able to enjoy a lot of laughs as I did.
Is pink really women's favorite color?
Without a doubt - Once the "high heels" scene comes into play in "Operation Petticoat" it, alone, sets the whole predictable tone for the remainder of this film's story. (You'll see what I mean when it happens)
IMO - Had 1959's "Operation Petticoat" dispensed with the entire "damsels-in-distress" angle of its story-line and just been presented as a straight-forward WW2 drama - Then - It would have fared so much better as worthwhile entertainment, in the long run.
(*Trivia notes*) - This film was the 3rd highest-grossing picture of 1960 (behind "Psycho" and "Ben Hur"). It inevitably spawned a short-lived TV Sit-Com which ran for only 2 seasons (1977-1979).
Scenario totally plausible & characters believable. Good cast chemistry. Great movie to watch.
Needs sub titles. Tony Curtis talks to fast for old ears.
