Another structured, predictable flick. It has some moments but nothing dramatic specially when you know how it ends.
The woman in black and Awakening are scary films not this one.

This would have been a great movie if it didn't rely on jump-scares so much. The story and character of Sarah Winchester and the Winchester Mystery House are interesting enough without the Hollywood scary movie treatment. The protagonist, Dr. Eric Price, is wholly unlikeable and his back story seems forced and unbelievable. This movie ultimately can't decide if it wants to be an intensely creepy supernatural thriller or moody period drama-mystery, and it kind of fails at both.

I believe I would have enjoyed the movie more if I was 8 years old. It would have been a good scary movie like those other movies of that time the Swamp Thing. But at my age now I just found the movie to be ok and something just to waste time during the winter. I need to get a life.

A made up story to explain the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the reason the Winchester house was built,,good story telling,,although completely made up story.

I love the Winchester Mystery House and think Sarah Winchester gets unfairly characterized as the "craziest person ever" when rich people often spend their money in strange ways (tiger, anyone?) and seances and the like were common for that time period.

I didn't know what to expect with this movie, and felt like it was more of your standard ghost story, just set in this historic location. They did make Sarah seem just a bit less "crazy' and emphasized the odd nature of the design of this home.

I would recommend this film if for nothing more than to see the house in action and being used as it would have been at that time.

This movie was okay. This movie is based on the true story of the Winchester family and the crazy famous sprawling Winchester mansion. I watched the movie mainly because of the fascinating and unique house. The story was moderately entertaining and moderately spooky. I found the child actor tedious and annoying and was secretly rooting for the ghosts to succeed in taking him away. I enjoyed the beautiful set and the costumes and also Helen Mirren's performance, but the rest was just average.

Cute kid with red hair. Great old house. Stupid movie. Why did Helen Mirren do this movie? Did she need money? Dull, plodding, odd, stupid.

I like this movie. There were some good made you jump moments. You have to turn the volume on your Tv up so that you can get that effect. Well acted to. I think I will watch it again?

Over the years, had oft wondered about the backstory to this strange house, as to the why of it (that is also why I like to watch 'bonus features' after movies, as they cover so much more ground beyond the storyline in the film itself; as this one also did).
Helen Mirren was stirring as the somber, mysterious, conversley sensitive, yet strong main character.
Great to see this bit of history portrayed in a film, and an eerie, spooky one at that. That there is still such a house and the film is based in facts, makes it all the more haunting and compelling a story. See it if you dare!

The actual premiss of the the movie was quite interesting. However, I doubt this was very accurate historically and I felt that they took what could have been a really great psychological thriller and turned it into a run-of-the-mill ghost story. PRetty much a waste of Helen Mirren’s time and talent.

*Spoiler Alert*, read quotes to refresh key points after watched the film:

Sometimes we all need a little help to see the difference between reality and illusion. And that's about taking control, about not letting fear control you. Because fear in the end only exists in your mind.
She spent the last 20 years expanding it (an eight room house originally.) What stands now is a gargantuan seven storied structure, with no apparent rhyme or reason, no master plan, each maze of halls more confusing than the next. A house under never-ending construction, built on the orders of a grieving widow whose mind is as chaotic as the house itself.

I understand the Winchester is still considered the superior rifle on the market, ma'am.
-Superior? Superior at what?
Accuracy, range, stopping power.
-Killing. Indiscriminate killing. Very superior.
You feel responsible for the misuse of your product? If a weapon works as intended, one can hardly call it a misuse.
-Well, it can be used for good or bad, depending on the person wielding it.
See, profiting from such a thing as violence and death, that is a wickedness that follows you like a shadow. Yes, we might also call those shadows "guilt."
You know, I keep records of all the lives a Winchester has taken. Hundreds have been reported. Probably thousands haven't. The guilty, the innocent... The rifle doesn't discriminate. And many of the souls make their way to this house.
We hold on to mementos to help us heal. But sometimes, they do more harm than good.

So 13 is a devilish number to protect you from devils?
-No, no, no. That is a divine number, to protect the cycle of life and death.
They want me to reconstruct the rooms that they died in, then they can enter our world. And the trouble is, I don't always know who it is I'm speaking with. It could be some innocent bystander or a victim of a crime, or someone else.
I show them my deep remorse. I want to help them let go of their grief and their anger.
-And how do they react?
Favorably. Yes, mostly. Once they are at peace, then they can move on. We can tear down their room, and then we start again.
-And are there those that don't react so favorably?
Yes. Yes, we lock them away.
-How does one lock a spirit away?
Thirteen nails seals them in. Once they find peace, we can release them, and they can leave this house.

She has created a vessel for the deceased to communicate with her. She's certainly created some architectural oddities.
Do you know who the most terrifying monster is, Doctor?
The one you invite into your own home.
The farmer's old mule fell into his well. …The farmer heard... He heard the mule crying. And it broke his heart. He chose to bury the animal in the well and put it out of its... Its hardship. He started shoveling. The mule realized that every time dirt fell on his back, he could shake it off and step up. Shovel after shovel. He could shake it off and he could step up... Shake it off. It wasn't long before the old mule, battered and exhausted, stepped over the wall of that well. What should have buried him... Saved him. And he overcame...
What are you going to do next?
-Rebuild, of course.
