I read this many years ago when it first appeared and its impact remains to this day. It is the story of a seemingly ordinary American, hurled into that pole of Soviet ferocity known as the Gulag. It is the story of a man whose humanity and extraordinary courage triumph over adversity we can scarcely comprehend. His family moved to the Soviet Union through a little known arrangement made by the Ford Motor Company in the 1930s. He naively stayed behind, rapidly achieved fame as an aerobatic pilot, but then refused to give up his US citizenship, for which he is promptly thrown into gulag. His account of sadistic savagery, extraordinary courage in the face of cruelty and despair that would crush almost anyone, his release, romance and marriage in exile, only to be forced to the brink of starvation and survive with his family in a hole cut in the ice, is a story beyond any other I have read. If Solshenytzen's Gulag Archipelago is the encyclopedia of that terrible time and place, Victor Herman gives it an American face you cannot ignore. This book will change your life view.
