President Mohammed Nasheed of the Maldives is confronting a problem greater than any other world leader has ever faced - the survival of his country and everyone in it. Nasheed, who brought democracy to the Maldives after decades of despotic rule, now faces an even greater challenge: as one of the most low-lying countries in the world, a rise of three feet in sea level would submerge the 1200 islands of the Maldives and make them uninhabitable.

Mohamed Nasheed survives prison, torture, and solitary in a 3x5' cell to become the first democratically elected president of The Maldives, an archipelago of 2,000 islands. His goals: adapt his country to climate change as the oceans rise, and use the moral high ground in negotiating with other countries at the Copenhagen 2009 climate conference. In a wise tactic, the film makers are made part of the actual Maldivian team so they can gain access; they interview diplomats from India and the U.K.. This is both a behind-the-scenes peek into why countries resist going carbon neutral and a portrait of an idealist all-too-aware of his beloved country's fate, yet still determined to do what he can to save it. Note: in the U.S., the Louisianian townspeople of Isle de Jean Charles are the first Americans to be resettled as their lands disappear underneath water.

I checked the comments and this got some good reviews. I was bored soon after starting this movie. Perhaps I will try it again some other time.

thought provoking documentary on one man's response to global warming's impact on his country. sad to see that at the end the military forces him out of power

This is a 101-minute documentary directed by Jon Shenk in 2011 about world climate change.
The film focuses on the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference, commonly known as the Copenhagen Summit, which was held at the Bella Center in Copenhagen, Denmark, between 7 and 18 December 2009.
This conference marked the first time in history that China, India, and the United States agreed to reduce carbon emissions.
The agreement, however, is NOT legally binding and does NOT contain any legally binding commitments for reducing carbon emissions.
Although the safe level is below 350, the atmospheric carbon emissions continued to rise from 387 to 390 parts per million in the following year.
In February 2012, Mohamed Nasheed resigned the presidency under the threat of violence in a coup d'état perpetrated by security forces loyal to the former dictator.
"It is going to be very difficult," said Mohamed Nasheed, "for us to adapt to climate change issues if we do not have a solid and secure democratic governance."
It is a profoundly eye-opening documentary.

As a documentary on the issue of global warming this is a good one. A couple of decades back I visited Maldives and loved those pie-shape islands. Definitely don't want to see them submerged, which is the direction they are, unfortunately, heading. The tagline: 'Can this man save the world?' is definitely overblown, though.

Sometimes interesting. Good documentary on threat of rising sea levels.Too bad the President ousted with a coup by former President and military. Had never heard of Maldive. Did some fast forward.

This film presents a truly awe-inspiring real life story in a wonderfully imaginative and engaging way.

This movie was entertaining and interesting but not one of my favorite for this year. Not too bad---good performance. I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.

Learned about recent Maldivian history, and based on the lack of action from the industrial powers, learned I should visit before it's underwater. Shows the real politics of international treaties.

Naive and depressing.
