Wonderfully crafted story on the theme "be careful of what you wish". Reminded me of The Monkey's Paw short story by W W Jacobs that I read years ago in school.

A very atmospheric mystery set in Malaysia where you're not quite sure who is going to help or hinder the protagonists. The folklore gets explained well, along with the magic elements. This is a great read, especially if you want to travel in your armchair.

This was a really pleasant mystery/ghost story/romance. I didn't find the characters were very deep or remarkable, but I enjoyed the story.

This book was a surprisingly engaging novel featuring natural and supernatural elements well blended into poignant themes addressing gender and tradition. I enjoyed and appreciated the author’s ability to deliver captivating material to an audience not familiar with the culture and folklore surrounding the subject matter. I leapt into this book with little background and an open mind and definitely was pleasantly surprised.

This exotic story set in 1930's Malaysia is intriguingly anchored by the five Confucian virtues: Ren (benevolence, charity, humanity), Yi (honesty and uprightnesss), Zhi or Ji (knowledge), Xi (faithfulness), and Li (propriety, politeness). We need Ji Lin, the seamstress/dance hall girl, early in the book and learn about her step-sibling, Xin. That's two virtures. Then we meet Ren, the houseboy, with a deceased twin whose name was Yi. That's four out of five. For some time Ji Lin and Ren destinies run parallel, but then they begin to cross in unexpected ways. Both realize their names make them a part of a set. Who will join them as the fifth virtue? What is behind the string of deaths in the hospital town? Is the myth of the night tiger lurking in their midst? The author does an excellent job narrating her own work and I would heartily recommend this enlightening glimpse into Malaysia during British occupation.

The Night Tiger was magical! I loved how the author pulled together multiple narratives and the sense of atmosphere that was apparent throughout. Since I'm a huge historical fiction fan, I also really enjoyed the historical detail of Malaysia.

I enjoyed this book. It was a little slow at the beginning and I never did find that it was a "page-turner" but the setting was well done and the magical realism was intriguing. This one won't keep you up at night wanting to read another chapter but it is a good story.

Just finished The Night Tiger and loved it. It's a bit slow--languorous--at the beginning, but I could hardly put it down for the last 100 pages. Much of the story relates to the spirit world, but there's also mystery, danger and love. For me there was the extra pleasure of its setting, Malaya in 1931, as I was there for several years a long time ago. Terima kasih, Yangsze Choo! Please write another book soon!
