Rumplestiltskin wasn't one of the stories that particularly puzzled me as a child. It has some classic fairy tale elements such as commoners and kings, strange bargains and the power of true names that made sense to me. However, as Vivian Vande Velde points out, some parts of the story really are odd. Wouldn't someone who could spin straw into gold be the richest person in the kingdom already? What does Rumplestiltskin want with a baby anyway? The Rumplestiltskin Problem takes a very entertaining look at these and many other questions raised by an old tale.
