It's interesting that this book won the Caldecott medal in 1960. However, to the best of my knowledge, this is not actually a Russian folk tale. Rather, it is a Russification of the Italian "La Befana" tale, perhaps also influenced by the Biblical story of Mary and Martha. If you are interested in genuine Russian holiday/winter stories, I recommend that you seek out tales of Grandfather Frost.
