Denial

a Memoir of Terror
Sep 25, 2011Vandyoak rated this title 2.5 out of 5 stars
This book tries to be two things at once: treatise on PTSD and personal account of tragedy. The result is a jumble of tone and focus that never really achieves its goal. Stern seems so detached from the various tragedies in her life and the reader never really gets a sense of her struggles or her feelings. The chapters about counter-terrorism training and PTSD in returning soldiers don't add anything to the reader's understanding of her. It's very hard to critique a memoir, but I think that stronger writing and editing was needed here.
