I'm going to go against the average reader and say that this installment was better than the first. Take into account that at the time I'm writing this review, I've actually read the next two or three installments, so I have some level of comparison of "meh" vs "OMG why did I just read that?". As derivative as the series is, it's still fun at this point. Is Magnus going to turn out like dad? What the heck is going on with the natural disasters? While there isn't a lot of character development, I would say the plot doesn't so much move forward, as thicken. Rhodes adds more confusion to be sorted at some undisclosed later date. If you liked the first book enough to read this one, you probably won't be disappointed.
