For me this book was primarily about abandonment. Also loyalty, pain and forgiveness within a family. It is not predictable especially after Mom shows up near the end. It is written dispassionately. but I understood the narrators feelings having lived through a step mother and invading family in our house myself. I had to read right to the end, as though the narrator might reveals insights into the mysteries of familial relationships.
