This book is absolutely wonderful, clever, funny, and engaging until the last chapter. The mystery itself is intriguing and will draw you in with no doubt. All of the characters are interesting and have unique voices, and the narration of Dr. John Watson is never intrusive and keeps the novel moving along at a fantastic pace. The book is two parts mastery and one part horror, which makes it for a very interesting read. I appreciate that Doyle sets the narrative up in various ways only to pull the rug out from under you a few times, including a few red herrings which are wonderfully handled and tied up. As I said before, my only complaint is the last chapter. In this chapter Watson asks Holmes to sum up the entire case and fill in the missing pieces, which he does in a very long-winded exposition. It's a somewhat disappointing conclusion to the book, especially when all of the chapters prior are so wonderfully engaging. The final chapter robs this book of its fifth star in my opinion, but it is still an otherwise incredible and quick read. Highly recommended.
